The global automobile industry is a mature industry, with production growth rates ranging between 1.29% and 5.7% over the last five years, and sales growth rates ranging between 0.48% and 3.63% over the same period. Supply has always exceeded demand but 2005 estimates put the supply growth rate at 1.29% and demand growth rate at 1.83%. Demand was just over 58.69m units in 2005, while supply was in excess of 64.78m units (Figure 3.1) .
 
In 2009, the total automobile production in the world was 61,714,689 units. In 2009, the sales volume of the global auto market reduced by about 4.2% Globally, auto sales have fallen after governments withdrew stimulus measures, offered during recession, which had been holding up sales in the US, China, Europe and Japan. In 2010, global growth in auto sales is expected to be limited to 10% or 70.4 million vehicles and in 2011, it is expected to be 7.1%. 
 
In 2010, the global production of automobiles grew at the rate of 26% y-o-y.
