Major Oil Players in the US

The major players in the US oil and gas industry are integrated energy giants like ExxonMobil, Chevron Corporation, ConocoPhillips, Royal Dutch Shell and BP Plc. They have a significant share in both the upstream and downstream segments of the US oil and gas industry 
with strong financial performance 
 
In 2009, Exxon Mobil was the leading O&G company in the US with USD233,323 million, USD442,851 million and USD19,280 million in Assets, Revenues and Net Income respectively
 
Chevron Corp was the second largest O&G company of the US with USD164,621 million, USD263,159 million and USD10,483 million in Assets, Revenues and Net Income respectively
 
Conoco Phillips was the third largest O&G company of the US with USD152,588 million and USD230,764 in Assets and Revenues respectively
 
BP Plc and Royal Dutch Shell were the other large oil and gas companies in the US
 
As per Ernst & Young’s US E&P Benchmark Study 2012 (focusing on large public O&G companies), BP Plc. (BP) was the largest O&G company in the US in 2011, on the basis of revenues. 
 
BP, was the largest company in terms of oil reserves, while Chevron Corporation was the largest company in terms of oil production in 2011. 
 
Exxon Mobil had the largest proven gas reserves in 2011 and it also was the largest gas producers in the US. 
 
Increase in the reserves of oil and gas is attributable to unconventional sources of energy such as shale oil and shale gas.

Major players in Europe and Eurasia include global integrated giants like BP Plc, Royal Dutch Shell, ExxonMobil, Total SA, ENI and Chevron Corporation (Table 7.3) . Apart from these, other notable players in the region are OMV AG of Austria which is a leading oil and gas company in Central and Eastern Europe, RWE Dea AG of Germany; Statoil ASA, Norway's oil and gas exploration, production, transport, refining, and marketing giant; Gazprom, Russia's largest company which produces 94% of the country's natural gas; Lukoil which is Russia’s number one integrated oil company; Repsol YPF of Spain, which is a fully integrated oil and gas company; and BG Group Plc of UK which is involved in oil and gas exploration along with downstream operations of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production, gas transmission and distribution, and power generation. Profiles of some of the above will now be looked at in brief.
The oil and chemicals group OMV is Austria's largest industrial company. It is involved in the exploration and production (E&P) of oil and gas, refining, transportation, and gas storage. OMV has proved reserves of 410m boe. The company has E&P activities in 18 countries across five continents and has a 14% retail market share in Central and Eastern Europe. It also manufactures plastics and fertilizers. OMV's largest shareholders are the Austrian state holding company ÖIAG (31.5%) and the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) of Abu Dhabi (17.6%).
RWE Dea AG is one of the leading petroleum companies in Germany, with a special focus on activities relating to the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas. RWE Dea has more than 100 years of experience in cutting-edge drilling and production technologies. The company is involved in the exploration and production of oil and gas in Germany and in other countries such as Norway, Egypt, Dubai, Denmark, Poland and Kazakhstan.
Statoil is an integrated oil and gas company with activities in 32 countries and around 25,600 employees. In 2004, its total revenues amounted to NOK306.2 billion. The group accounts for 60% of all Norwegian oil and gas production, and its international production is on the rise. One of the world’s biggest sellers of crude oil, Statoil is also a major supplier of natural gas in the European market and has substantial industrial operations. The company focuses its upstream activities in the Norwegian continental shelf, the North and Caspian Seas, Western Africa and Venezuela. It has proved reserves of nearly 4.3 billion boe. The group has service stations in Scandinavia, Ireland, Poland, the Baltic States and Russia.
As of 2011, some of the prominent oil and gas companies of Europe and Eurasia were BG Group, BP Plc., Cairn energy Plc., ENI SpA, Lukoil, Lundin Petroleum, OAO Gazprom, Repsol YPF, Royal Dutch Shell, OAO Rosneft, Statoil and Total SA.
