But what does John say about Jesus?
“In him was life, and the life was the light of men…” -John 1:4
As you see God the Father creating light and life in the Genesis account of creation, here in John we see Jesus, God the Son creating new life, Spiritual life in the new creation.
And what happens when we receive this light? Verse 12 tells us that we become children of God!
Just like before God brought the light to the earth, and there was nothing but disorder, chaos, and darkness, the same thing is true of us before Christ brings His light, and gives us his life. Before Christ brings his light to us, we are filled with nothing but disorder, chaos, and darkness. Apart from Christ everything is darkness. Apart from Christ everything else is ultimately meaningless. We need the logos to give us and our lives meaning.
Look at John 3:19-21:
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
Throughout the New Testament, darkness is synonymous, or an analogy for sin, and evil. Apart from Christ and his life, and his light, this is all we have within us. Apart from Christ we are nothing but sinful. Knowing what we know about how Holy God is, how perfectly righteous He is, we know that God can have nothing to do with sin. God can have no fellowship with sin. So, because of who we are apart from Christ, because of our sin and evil and darkness and wickedness, we are completely and totally separated from God. And I think looking at John 3:19-21 it is clear that apart from the light of Christ, we want nothing to do with God. Or at least we want nothing to do with the God of the Bible.
But with the light of Christ, we want God. With the light of Christ, we run to God. With the light of Christ we get life. We get spiritual life. We get new life. We get the very life of God.
How beautiful a truth is that?
