What do you do when your book genre can't be ID'ed?
What is an author to do when his story has so many genre categories, that make it impossible to narrow it down to just one or two? I had this problem with my latest novel, “An Abduction Revelation.” Readers feedback said that although it is written like a memoir, it had to be fiction. Now how can a memoir be fiction? The story is certainly a mystery, could be a thriller, definitely an action/adventure, maybe science fiction, some romance, but is written like a memoir. Are you totally confused now?
The only choice I had was to create a new genre category. I thought about calling it a sci-fi memoir, but that defies logic. I couldn’t call it one or the other, that would just confuse potential readers. I had to come up with a new genre. After much thought, I finally settled on ‘Tall Tale’. So now, all I have to do is petition whoever it is that makes up genres to add “Tall Tale’ to the genre list. Probably only going to happen in my dreams. Hey, maybe ‘Dreams’ could be a genre. And since my thoughts are running rapid, I can even foresee ‘Imagination’ being added to the list. After all, some of my readers have told me that my imagination had to of gone wild while writing “An Abduction Revelation.”
