Micah was too shy to participate in a poetry contest. Nevertheless, when his dad promised him a new bicycle he joined and won first prize.

There once was a bright boy named Micah, who forever studied and excelled in school. Last year he won a science fair contest. This year, though he was simply in third grade, he desired to enter his school’s poetry contest and compete among the eighth graders. He understood competing against the middle schoolers would be a tough call. Except, his dad promised to purchase him a brand-new bicycle if he participated and won. And this was all the motivation he needed.

Though Micah was a tad shy, he knew he would do his best. Public speaking was not his forte. He would have preferred to play a melody on his guitar.  He was extremely nervous to speak on a microphone beside hundreds of school kids.

Simply thinking about all those eyes gazing at him while he recited his poem made Micah sweat profusely. His mother consoled him and told him if he recited his poem every day in front of a mirror it would seem like a song he had composed for his spiffy guitar. Though Micah felt a tad better with his mother’s reassuring words, he didn’t know how he was going to get over his awful feeling of stage fright.

Every time Micah rehearsed in a mirror, he would burst out laughing. His amusing gestures would spark a chortle within, and he couldn’t contain himself. He wept and believed he would be defeated. Possibly, it's this "Three Little Kittens" poem that is causing me to feel this way, he thought to himself. However, this was his favorite poem and he simply had to memorize it and learn how to enunciate it with ease and expression. It was just so difficult.

Micah practiced and rehearsed and still, there was no improvement. His mother suggested he write the tale of the poem one hundred times on a sheet of paper. He obeyed and felt a tad more confident, nevertheless, he was not ever ready for his school’s poetry contest.

On the day of the match, Micah wore an adorable cat outfit with brown whiskers. An eighth grader was a runner-up for his perfect reciting of "William Shakespeare's sonnet number XVIII".

Micah, shaking in his boots, hopped on stage when it was his turn. He cried like a little kitten and danced when he found his mittens. In the end, he hopped on a bed made of cotton flowers to pray for a good day.

The crowd roared and cheered for Micah and the judges deemed he was the winner.

The end.
