I am an avid fan of the movies and this article explores a spiritual analogy.

I am an avid fan of the movies. I enjoy watching them in a movie theater, on television, on my laptop, or even on my cellphone. Cinema has completed more than a century of existence. It was in 1895 that the Lumiere Brothers in Europe introduced this spectacle to the world. Since then the movies have entranced and entertained audiences around the world. They have survived even the television age and continue to be a dominant art form. Though I enjoy watching movies in many ways, I have found that they have their greatest impact when seen on a big screen. I have a dedicated media room in my home where I like to watch epics like “The Ten Commandments” and “Ben Hur” on a large screen. That set me thinking about why watching movies on a big screen has such an impact. I realized that it is because the larger-than-life images that dominate me in the dark create a memorable cinematic experience. I am also able to see more detail in every frame which my eyes just cannot resolve on a smaller screen. All this makes for a more immersive viewing experience. A similar feeling overtakes me when I look at God’s creation. I often spend time on my terrace where I can get an unobstructed view of the sky, trees and birds. I see how vast and beautiful the world is. The Psalmist King David, when he gazed up at the moon and the stars in the night sky, also felt awed by the majesty and grandeur of God’s creation. He felt that humanity was such a tiny speck in creation, that he wondered that God even cared about man. Yet he also knew that the same God had given man dominion over all His creation and put all things under him (Ps 8:3-8). Saint Augustine (354-440) echoes this when he wrote - “Man who is only a small part of your creation desires to praise you. We take delight in praising you, because you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.” (Augustine in his autobiography ‘Çonfessions’). The Bible says that the invisible attributes of God are clearly seen in His visible creation. The sweep and magnificence of His creation is a reflection of the great eternal power of God (Rom 1:20). His power not only sustains the universe, but is also available to us personally. Through faith in Jesus we can begin a new and exciting relationship with our creator. If we humble ourselves and commit our lives to him, he can exalt us and make us more than conquerors in life (Rom 8:37).
