Don't miss the above 3 minute message from Jack.

Long time health guru Jack LaLanne said, “The reason that you can’t do what you used to do, is because you stopped doing it. You use to be able to swim 20 laps in the pool, but now you can’t because you stopped swimming. So it’s time to get back to it."

Jack was always showing what was possible. At age 60, for the second time, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman's Wharf. Again, he was handcuffed, but this time he was also shackled and towed a 1,000 lb boat.

At age 70,handcuffed, shackled, and fighting strong winds and currents, he towed 70 boats with 70 people, from the Queen's Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary, 1.5 miles.

About diet, Jack said, “If you had a million dollar race horse, would you feed him candy bars, potato chips, coffee and donuts?”

Jack said, “I work out for two hours, seven days a week, even when I’m traveling. I hate it, but I love the results. That’s the key, baby.”

And for us businessmen, Jack said, “I travel around to all my franchise gyms and tell the owners, ‘Push your customers to train hard for 30 minutes, and then let them go to the Jacuzzi where it’s easy and feels good. Pushing the customers to train hard will give them results and they’ll continue to be members. Don’t worry about money. Help the customers first, and the money will come.”

Jack was serious about his image when he joked, “In my business, I can’t even be seen walking a fat dog.”

However, Jack was wrong about one thing. He said, "I can’t afford to die, it'll ruin my image." Jack passed away at a healthy 96 years old. But his image is still intact because he performed his daily workout routine the day before he died.

That was Jack. Always inspiring, like in the video. I used to catch him sometimes on his television exercise shows. But I usually didn't watch and was out the door because I thought that those shows were for housewives and shut-ins.

I prided myself for cooking my own food and eating right for over 30 years that kept my waistline the same for all those years. I'm still eating right, but perhaps too much, and find that, now that I cannot leave the electric wheelchair and only exercise 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening on my bicycle style (includes moving my arms back and forth vigorously) exercise machine does little to stop the post-middle-age spread. In my case, the loss of muscle control is also part of the problem that exercise can't fix.

But what me worry? I'm happy.
