John Frankenheimer tells the story on video at the link below. or read the short version here. He directed: The Train, The Manchurian Candidate, 7 Days in May, Black Sunday & Grand Prix.

In 1960, director John Frankenheimer wanted Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca) to be in his TV production of Turn of the Screw. She wanted to meet him first, so he took a plane to Sweden and a speed boat across the freezing North Sea to a small rock island where she and her husband lived.

Ingrid told John,

“You must be tired, so please take a sauna.”

There was a sauna shack next to the pier, so John entered it naked. Ingrid walked in saying, “I thought maybe I would join you.” She took off her robe with nothing underneath.

John tells the story:

“I was 28 years old. Ingrid was 35 and beautiful. As we talked, I started to get feelings which became physical. So, I told her, ‘I’m going to jump in the water’. I bent over to hide myself, went out of the shack and jumped into the freezing sea. When I got out, I couldn’t tell if I was a boy or a girl.

"We continued chatting and I soon got feelings again and jumped into the sea again. After the third time, Ingrid said, ‘You must really love the sea’.

"I jumped into that damned, freezing sea five times that night.

"Many years later, I told Ingrid that story and she cried sentimentally. I cried, too.”

It's always interesting to read about someone else's triumphs, even though it would have been more fun to live them. Ingrid was at her best in Casablanca.

Those Scandinavian girls certainly are free spirits. You reminded me of two Scandinavian girlfriends that I lost through ill-fated circumstances and the only time I entered a sauna and came out more exhausted than I ever was and before I went in.

Also reminded me of Joshua Logan's difficulty with Mitzi Gaynor, getting her to be a little freer with the flesh, like people in the South Pacific, in his movie, South Pacific. She eventually came around to liking the idea and posed for Playboy.
