Was the house under the roller-coaster in 'Annie Hall' real?

Yes, it was. The house was built in 1895 and operated as a small inn called The Kensington Hotel. In 1925, to attract business, the owner hired ‘the father of the modern roller coaster’ John A. Miller to build a wooden coaster over the house. The second floor of the house was removed to make room for the tracks and steel poles were placed through the building to support the coaster.

The Moran family live there from 1925 to 1988. When a woman got engaged to a family member and came to the house. She said;

“Suddenly the house started to rumble, china-plates on the walls were rattling, the chandelier was swinging, and I heard people outside screaming. But my future in-laws were calmly sitting there drinking coffee. I thought an earthquake was happening or that I was losing my mind. But then my fiancé said, ‘It’s just the coaster. It will run a lot because it’s summertime’.”

In 1976, when Woody Allen was location scouting Coney Island, he saw the house and immediately changed his character’s home to the one under the coaster. The coaster stopped operation in 1982. A fire gutted the house in 1991. The coaster was torn down in 2000.

“When I was a boy and visited my aunt's house, the coaster sound and vibrating bed would put me to sleep,” said one relative.

The family name should have been, Moron, for their willingness to live in the building constantly racked with the sound and vibration of a roller coaster. Not conducive to good sleep and probably resulted in some family members developing mental illness similar to Woody Allen's distinct kind of mental derangement that everyone seems to, mistakingly, love.

I never saw, Annie Hall. So thanks for bringing this architectural and sociological oddity to my attention.
