                                                                     Above Video: Casablancas gives a 4 minute photo-talk of his career.

When John Casablancas started his Elite Modeling Agency in NYC, it set off the now famous 'Modeling Wars' between him, the Eileen Ford Agency and others. Casablancas had hired away one of Ford's managers, thus setting her against this Johnny-come-lately. She sued him for 7 million dollars.

Casablanca's said;

"Ford even sent the migration people to my office. But how could they have known that me, the French-Spanish-Mexican playboy with a name like Casablancas, was actually born an American, just a few miles away from her country house."

Casablancas had models, such as Christie Brinkley & Paulina Porizkova making $500,000 a year. The agency itself was bringing in 100 million dollars a year.

Casablancas said,

"When I started the agency, I used the Hollywood studio system from the 1940's as an example. They would build up a star from A to Z and control everything from their looks, to personal appearances and press.

"Before my agency, the public knew model's faces, but not their names. I changed that because if a model could become a celebrity, their value was much more."

And how did the modeling wars end up?

Casablanca said;

"All the other American modeling agencies joined forces with Ford against us which lasted two years. It turned out to be the best publicity we could ever dream of. We became famous overnight. And many models suddenly wanted to join our little boutique.

"This was Ford's and the other agencies biggest mistake; they hated us too much. And they threatened us in such harsh ways, that we ended up winning the public's hearts."

A lesson in publicity from history. Bad publicity is just as good, and often much better than good publicity. And when it's on national media news a lot better than any marketing or promotional effort that is paid for. And it's free.

Why I've often said… "Who do I have to kill to get someone to read my books?" As if one would have to be notorious to even be noticed.

Come to think of it… Whenever I think of modeling, I think of Ford. I still don't know who Casablancas is except from this brief article.
