In spite of the incredible devastation Covid-19 has brought upon the world, is it possible to find personal growth while navigating the pandemic?

It has now been a year since Covid-19 invaded our shores and changed our lives forever... and it's still going on. It will be, perhaps, another year before we can come up for air (probably still wearing a mask or two) and gingerly tread along. I'm "going with the flow"...

Gratefully, oh, yes, ever-so-gratefully, we now have a vaccine that will help us fight this enemy and as more and more Americans agree to take it, we will eventually be on our way.

As one who lives alone and has chosen to be 100% respectful of Covid, doing everything possible to protect myself and others, it has been an incredible challenge because it takes a lot of self discipline, self control and an attitude of delayed gratification to live each day in a totally different way.

My last year, perhaps not been exactly like WW II's Anne Frank, but close. I've not socialized (still won't), shopped online and eventually allowed myself to grocery shop at Whole Foods during senior hours at 7:00AM. Amazon has made a happy ton on me and I am thrilled. Perhaps the biggest blessing of all has been my long, daily walk (4 miles) through Boston's beautiful parks or the Seaport. My poor marathon-beaten up knees are feeling it, but it's a small price to pay for the fresh air!

The blessings of being a loner by choice (40 years as a PR/media specialist person burnt me out on people, God bless'em!) I have probably had an easier time than most people who absolutely rely on others for their entertainment or just need the energy of that wonderful human connection.

For the most part, people drain me and I truly prefer my own company - and that of my 12 personalities!

Throughout 2020, I would tell people that I was hanging out with Dr. Fauci as the person I've trusted more than anyone ever, and it still stands.

I have learned a lot this last year and truly believe I have become a better person: more patient (for sure!); more compassionate, more tolerant, more reflective (if possible!) and, dare I say, even more loving?

I've kept incredibly busy with my hobbies (exercise, Yoga, Tai Chi, reading, Zoom, walking) and as a CA girl, self care (skin, hair, nails - the works!); I would never, ever, let myself go. And it takes time; lots of it.

I hope to do my next article on my biggest challenge: taking the vaccine when I have life-threatening allergies, including Epinephrine. Yes, I have had "the conversation with my doctor(s)" and even they, admitted they still did not know enough about it so in my case, to "hold out," knowing I'm being super careful.

Hold out, for how long?

Between you and me, dear reader, the only - one and only thing I really miss is the gym - my health spa where I spend 3-4 hours daily.

Perhaps, eventually, as the year goes on I will have to decide what and when to take the plunge. For now? the shower is a good start!

Hi Mary: This is a super article written with us in mind. It is so well-expressed. I got my first Covid-19 shot last week. The line of cars was at least a mile long. I listened to classical music all the while and never complained once. Take care. I will be tracking your postings like a bloodhound in search of things pure, simple, and wonderful. --Ed
