A brief article explaining the significance of our great teachers.
Teachers Need Our Appreciation and Support…I owe a lot to all the teachers in Spotsylvania County, Virginia who all had a hand in shaping me. Miss Kelly, Miss Pritchett, Mr. Harrison. We all remember the teachers who made the classroom and our assignments interesting. Great teachers have the unique ability to make their students want to learn. Great teachers bring their unique personalities and life experiences to the classroom. They are human beings, not robots. It bothers me how more restrictions are being placed on our teachers nowadays, whereby some of these restrictions give the teachers less freedom to inject their own uniqueness into the classroom, which ends up hurting the students. Instead of placing hard guidelines upon our teachers, we need to pay them more, and we need to show them more of our appreciation for all of their hard work and dedication they bring into the classroom. In ‘Coreville Park a reggae novel’, the teacher did nothing wrong, but yet, she was unjustly suspended. We need to stand up for our teachers, as they did in Coreville Park. I will agree that the job of teaching is harder than ever. My niece was teaching science for a few years, but has left to join industry once again. I don't know the particulars but she was teaching where there were teenagers and that may have been the reason for her leaving the occupation. On the other hand, my brother is married to a lifetime teacher who has retired from one huge school district and now is teaching 1500 miles away, 6th grade in a small town.
My junior high and senior high teachers generally had master degrees from major universities. Their courses were similar or superior to the ones I took at the state college I attended. But my long experience with schools of education teaching teachers to teach without any real subject matter and grade inflation, means that the quality of teachers turned out by teacher education mills is really substandard. The only cure is to pay teachers more and demand higher quality of content. The best always gravitate towards the highest paid professions. We need to remove the salary differences between teachers, doctors, football coaches, etc.
