In the book of Colossians, chapter 3, verse 13, the Apostle Paul instructs us, "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Understanding Forgiveness.

In the book of Colossians, chapter 3, verse 13, the Apostle Paul instructs us, "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
You see, my brothers and sisters, forgiveness is not an optional component of our Christian walk but an essential aspect of our faith. Our relationship with God was made possible because of the tremendous act of forgiveness that took place on the cross. Jesus Christ, our saviour, paid the ultimate price, forgiving our sins and opening the path for our redemption.

Forgiveness is a divine attribute. When we forgive, we emulate Christ, grow in His likeness, and express His love to the world. But let’s admit it: forgiveness can sometimes be challenging. Some wounds seem too deep to heal, transgressions that appear too grave to forget. However, the beauty of the Gospel is that it challenges us, transforms us, and invites us to transcend our human limitations.

In the book of Matthew, chapter 18, verses 21-22, Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” This passage is not about counting offences but about losing count. It’s about infinite grace, infinite love, and infinite forgiveness. Like the Lord’s, our forgiveness should not have conditions or limits.

It is essential to remember that forgiveness does not always mean forgetting, nor does it mean repeatedly allowing oneself to be subjected to harm or injustice. But forgiveness allows our hearts to be free from resentment and bitterness, and it is a divine tool that brings healing to our souls and peace to our minds.

As we gather here today, I invite each of us to look within our hearts. Is there someone we need to forgive? Is there a bitterness we’ve been nursing that needs to be let go? Remember, forgiveness is a journey, not a destination. It might take time and be difficult, but we walk closer to God with each step on this path.
Moreover, let’s not forget the forgiveness we need to seek from those we’ve wronged. Just as we ask for God’s mercy for our sins, let’s also seek the forgiveness of those we’ve hurt.

Dear brothers and sisters, in the spirit of Christ’s teachings, let us extend our hands in forgiveness, for in doing so, we bring His divine love to this world. As we leave today, let’s carry the message of forgiveness in our hearts and let it guide our thoughts, words, and actions.

Let us pray:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for Your divine forgiveness that cleanses us of our sins. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and help us to forgive others as You have forgiven us. Give us the strength to let go of our anger and bitterness and replace it with love, understanding, and compassion. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
