In our time technology has severed human beings from their own existence, and spirituality has become a consumer good for which the have's use to exploit the have-not's. How can we as members of humanity and, even more importantly, as members of the kingdom of God stand against this tide? When we see our fellow human beings and fellow Christians swept away by this torrent of despair and alienation, we appear to be fighting a losing battle. We see the technocratic society that thrives on efficiency and success in the expense of humanity. We see greed and pride as the dominant "virtue" worshipped by both rich and poor of this society. We see the poison of individualism disintegrate the bond between fellow human beings. We see legalists who condemn others for being less moral, less virtuous, and less righteous. We see people create God in their own image and annihilate those who refuse to accept this illusion. Indeed, as we observe these phenomena, we too will be tempted to enter the desert of despair. However, if we are true to our humanity, we must make a firm stand and refuse to be swept away.

If we truly understand the nature of our God, we will have the faith and courage to stand in the stream of living water, the source of our existence. However, when we stand in the streams, let us not be oblivious of the pain and torment of the desert. On the contrary, we should be more aware of the pain and torment because when we enter God's love we become acutely aware of what God is aware of, which is the condition of humanity. Indeed, this awareness will cause scruples in our mind, mood, and existence. It is tempting to discard these scruples to gain peace of mind by creating an illusion that everything is all right and everyone is happy. This collective illusion has driven many from their humanity.

But why not create this good mood, and peace of mind so that we can at least live with less torment? Isn't there enough torment in out everyday life from day in and day out common chords without having to reflect on our struggles and ambiguities? In short, aren't illusions nice ways to give life a break? These are crucial questions, and those who want to enter the stream of living water must live these questions. Indeed these questions may be the path toward a greater bonding with God, ourselves and other human beings. This is a difficult and dangerous journey, but at the same time exciting and full of discoveries. If we believe that our God is the creator of history and humanity, then faith and courage will overcome our fear. When we are resolute in living our the authentic life, we have the power to overcome the torrents and chaos in our lives. This is the will to life.
