Rap music reverberated through the kitchen's ceiling like a sonic boom. Jennifer sprang from the dilapidated kitchen chair, and a blast of heat from the opened screened door greeted her. she stared at herself in the wall mirror behind the kitchen table, as sweat trickeled down her smooth milk chocolate face, staining her meticulously applied, honey-amber, Fashion Fair Foundation. She sat back at the table, and turned the small fan with the rusty blades toward her face. "Bill," she yelled, and gave her head a vehement shake. Her long dark brown hair slid around her delicate round shoulders.
"Darn his hide!" she retrieved the broom from the pantry, and banged the ceiling with the handle. "Cut the noise, Bill." She banged again, harder. "Lower the volume."
A stupid boy. What a headache! Nutcase. . .acting like a ghetto punk. Leave the loud sound outside. Why can't I live in a nicer neighborhood? New Jersey Avenue stinks with dope peddlers, roustabouts, and homeless men lurking to cop a buck.

Professional Reviews

A NOVEL OF SHATTERED DREAMS AND HOPE
Theresa Grant has written a unique story of a young woman whose dreams for her own life keep getting shattered and taken from her; but she continues to hope and dream.
In the author's novel, "Hope and Desire," we follow the life of Jennifer Greene who wants to become a fashion designer and go to New York. Everything and everyone, it seems, is working against her dream.
The story is one about her struggles and of her never surrendering her desire and hope that some how she will succeed.
Grant makes use of a rich and articulate dialog between her characters to advance the plot along.
We begin to emotionally feel what life is like for her main character, Jennifer, as we continue to follow her life across the pages of this 100 page book. It is an easy book to read and enjoy if you have about two or three hours. Perfect book for a nice weekend reading session; I say this because that once you start the story, you will want to finish it in one sitting.
The author draws the reader into the heart break and disappointments of Jennifer's life. I do not want to give any of the ending away, but you will find it most satisfying after all the hardships Jennifer goes through. You will want to junp up and down for her.
Theresa Grant has talent which will become abvious to the reader, but she also has a personal inner fire of hope. Her novel's underlying theme is about never giving up your dreams or your desires in spite of all that will and can happen in your life. It makes you wonder what detours in her own life that she had to reroute around or jump over to find her own desires fulfilled.
The wording and phrases are not overdone and works well with the telling of her tale. If your idea of a good intertaining novel is murder, intrique, betrayal, romance and hope--- then this is a great book for you. Put this book on your short list of those you plan on buying and reading this year! You will not be disappointed.

The American Author's Association gives this book its FIVE STAR RATING!

AAA BOOK REVIEW

HOPE & DESIRE
Hope and Desire is a compelling story about a young woman named Jennifer who puts her life on hold for the sake of family. An amazing career opportunity takes her to New York City. She joins her sister and soon lands an even bigger opportunity for a competer. Jennifer finds her life swept into a series of life-changing events that threatens her future, from being tricked into marriage by an older man, to being accused of murder. with an unfailing determination and the help from the people in her life, she shows why you should never give up on yourself or your dreams.
I give this book four stars.

Reader Reviews for "Hope and Desire"

Reviewed by Afrika Abney 5/22/2007
Hope & Desire is an excellent story written, by Ms. Theresa E.Grant, about young woman Jennifer who puts your life on hold for the sake of her family. It is full of everyday episodes that families go through career changes, struggles, sorrow, pain and faith. The title of the book speaks for itself and carried out throughout its entirety. I was particularly drawn to the book because of its title and cover which was designed by Published America.
