As a retired university microbiology  professor, I have had nearly 40 years of experience in seeing the enormous range of understanding of science among our future voters. Citizens are continually being asked to make decisions that require a modicum of technical knowledge that most do not have. Questions regarding, for example, waste water treatment, desalination, potential carcinogens in consumer products and safety of cell phones come up almost daily. As a writer,  I’ve tried to present information in a form that aids citizens to answer some of these questions that are springing up in an increasingly complex world. I have taken the same tack in the industrial world, providing explanations of technical operations for non-technical, supervisorial personnel. Finally, I have followed a slightly different path by providing readers with an historical narrative of how one of California’s largest coastal wetlands called Bolsa Chica was rescued from becoming a massive marina/commercial/residential development by a small group of dedicated citizens. Bolsa Chica is now a 1300 acre state ecological reserve. In my fiction I try to include bits of science throughout the narratives to show how science permeates every aspect of our lives, whether we are aware of it or not.
