Karma Bank to Following By Listening by Chiemi

These song lyrics and art are tales, tides and twinkling lights - tunes telling stories of warmth and sun, city and sand, paths that lead, and the coins we can keep in the Karma Bank. Spirit's been bypassed for sorrow, dreaming of a better tomorrow .

Scripting the boogie: my joys in life are writing and dancing.

Background Information

I published a picture book, Butterfly and a social commentary, Reflections on Nigerian Christianity to commemorate my 40th year; a coming of age that prompted me to begin to live my dreams of authorship.  Following these, I co-authored Owanbe! Yoruba Celebrations of Life (2010).  I want to write about everything but there is so little time!  I want to write about my childhood, growing up the 2nd of three girls in a culture that reveres boys; of thinking that I had to be the ‘boy’ in our family – able to climb trees, kill chickens for dinner, and catch rats for sport.  I want to write about my youth, of going away to boarding school at the age of 12 (after I finally convinced Mom I could take care of my asthma) and having fun traveling by rail to school in northern Nigeria. I want to write about my college days, of being a part of ‘Lady Cool and the gang’ - seven women who forged a friendship that sustained us through boy drama, major exams, near-fatal illness, and thankfully, graduation. And I want to write about my life today; of being an immigrant, survivor of a traumatic marriage, a mom, and a professional. Writing puts a spring in my step so I develop my plots on long walks in the park. When not writing or plotting, I dance alone or with my daughters.  I love traveling particularly on the open road and can brag about driving 12-hours straight from Atlanta to South Jersey. An avid gardener, I hated watching my garden dry up during the drought that hit Georgia in the past three years and I am happy the rains are back and my garden is in bloom. During the day, I am a professor of political science and soccer mom. I also run a nonprofit organization, Africhild, Inc. which provides educational resources to Africa’s children.   I am currently working on a novella, Renike Comes to America, a story about an immigrant woman’s first years in the U.S. and with my co-author from Yoruba Celebrations, a cookbook, Obelawo: Yoruba Cooking Today.
