I've been painting since I was in third grade, and writing full novels since I was in fifth grade. I'm sure all that would be horrible now, but it was a start! I lived a fairly spartan existance on various army bases as a kid, subsisting on a heavy diet of comics and books. Alan Moore, HP Lovecraft, Neal Stephenson, Philip K. Dick, William Gibson, Anne Rice, and Frank Miller were all authors I followed voraciously.
At eighteen, I was a little rebellious punk rocker, and my super religious parents kicked me out of their, then moved to another country. After an eight month stint of homelessness, that included living in the woods, I finally got a job and even a ch3eap car. That car was flipped, and my face broke the windshield. Recovering and moving to DC, a knife fight with a crackhead svered the tendon on my left thumb. Moving back to Virginia, things were looking up. I attended art school, and then on the encouragement of my teacher, moved to NYC. I interviewed with book and comic companies, and finally settled into tattooing. I became well known in the industry, featured in an endless string of books and magazines, and continued to do artwork for books, magazines, and bands on the side. In 2001 I visited the hospital with a headache, and a catscan showed I had brain cancer. Nine days later I was recovering in ICU, when the twin towers went down.
Chemotherapy, radiation, and a marriage to my girlfriend Monica followed. Three years later, I was off the treatment, and things were looking up. Then in 2007, my wife was killed in a hit and run. A huge investigative campaign was mounted by me and her brother, but the perpetrator was never found.
Moving down to Austin, TX, I determined to finish my first novel. The Black Seas of Infinity was published by Anarchy Books in November, and I'm already hard at work on a collection of short stories.
