Most of my life I had dreamt to be an author. Unfortunately, my day job never provided the time to fulfill that dream. After retiring, time was no longer an excuse. Subject and plot became the hangup. To get me motivated, my wife suggested I write my memoirs. Now days, everyone seems to be writing their memoir. "After all," she said, "you have had an intriguing life."
The more I thought it, the more it made sense. I am the only person who knows my memories and when I pass they shall turn to ashes with me. Writing them down would also provide a history book for my desentants. They would then have an idea where their idicoy came from.
I started writing by hand in a big notebook. After awhile, with arrows pointing every which way and notes scribbled everywhere, I had a complete mess on my hands. Again my wife came to my rescue. "Why don't you join the 20th century and get a computer," she said. But then the computer and I started having issues right off the bat. We finally came to an agreement that I should take some training classes. We still have some issures, but they can usually be resolved. Behold: The Comeback Kid, The Memoirs of Thomas L. Hay was published in November 2011.
The process was an invigorating whirlwind of self-enlightment and an intense emotional trip. To jog my memory I would think of a song. How often a song reminds us of a person, a place, or a time in our lives. Looking at life, I recognized it is but a series of events, much like an assorted box of chocolates, never knowing what may come next.
My books are written in a rollicked conversational style. I tell my story, as if I were sitting with my readers around a campfire telling ghost stories. I used many 'idioms' that we all use in our everyday conversations.
