Carl’s expertise spans prison management, leadership, and advocacy. His books provide valuable insights into prison procedures, staff-inmate relationships, administrative decision-making, leadership styles, ethics, problem-solving, and motivational strategies. He currently serves as vice president of the Law Enforcement Officers Advocacy Council and is an advisory board member of David’s Hope Inc. His prison philosophy prioritizes public, staff, and inmate safety. With extensive experience in corrections from 1985 to 2014, Carl has consulted on prison reforms, drafting operational standards for the seriously mentally ill in partnership with David’s Hope. As a deputy warden and later with the Arizona Department of Corrections, he ensured secure environments, conducted investigations, developed training programs, and managed administrative tasks. His affiliations include the Arizona Gang Investigators Association, LEOAC, David’s Hope, and Corrections.Com. He also volunteers in civil rights advocacy, sentencing reform, and social justice causes. His passions include human rights, animal welfare, children’s advocacy, and civil rights.   A U.S. Army veteran and former combat medic, the author has spent decades navigating the long shadow of trauma, first in uniform, then in silence.
