Information
For years I felt as many writers do. I had something to say, but hadn’t a clue how to express it. So I penned drivel that no one except my loving family would dare ever read. It didn't take long for me to realize that there was something missing.
After a number of failed attempts, I finally gave up on the whole thing. I wrote out grocery lists, signed report cards and mailed birthday cards.
In 1989, I asked my grandmother, Helen Clay Sprague to record a tape of her childhood memories. I grew up listening to how things used to be before the advent of sophisticated technology. When life was hard but simple. A look into another century that I would have never visited if not for her.
I knew one day when Grandma left us, her sweet, funny stories would go with her. I'd never spent a day with her that didn't include hearing a few of her past adventures.
She didn't disappoint me. The stories she recorded were filled with giggles and she even imitated everyone's voices.
When she handed me the tape, I played it for a few minutes to make sure it worked. Then I put it away. I knew that so long as she was with us it wasn't time to listen to it yet.
When Grandma died, I reached for her tape out of grief, and let her voice wash over me. I heard a treasure trove of words; pouring from the heart of a woman who had known a full life and had lived it to the hilt, in her own way. She was one of the richest women I've ever known.
And from her passion for living, I discovered the key to my writing. I now pen what I know, what I love, and what I care most about. She taught me that.
