Since many purveyors of humor and comedy seem to come from unhappy childhoods -- and because he had been a shy, four-eyed, skinny kid from a broken home -- Richard Cutler thought he had suffered the requisite amount of harassment in his youth to make an easy go of it as a humor writer.
He was wrong.
Dying, as Edmund Gwenn once gasped, may be easy but comedy is hard. And so is humor.
Mr. Cutler would consult his major influences, Thorne Smith, Max Shulman, H. Allen Smith ... but they all finally took the easy route.
