When she was a youngster, Nancy spent many hours exploring the woods and creek next to her home in suburban Delaware. Returning home, she would empty her pockets of chunks of rose quartz, bird feathers, or a preying mantis cocoon. A neighborhood artist and hermit inspired Nancy’s love of nature by giving her books such as Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, and Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Nancy’s first art teacher took her sketching on location when she was 10 years old, further honing her observation skills and love of nature.

It wasn’t until many years later that Nancy combined her art and love of nature with writing. The Robins In Your Backyard was inspired by years of work as a trained wildlife rehabilitator at Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research in Newark, Delaware.

Her second book, Raccoon Moon, was inspired by two orphaned raccoon babies that Nancy rescued from an old silver maple tree in her yard. When they were healthy and had learned survival skills, the raccoons were released back into their den tree.

Nancy's new book is called Red Knot: A Shorebird's Incredible Journey. The story chronicles the dramatic 20,000-mile migration of one robin-sized shorebird, from the tip of South America to the Arctic Circle nesting grounds and back. The population of Red Knots has declined precipitously over the past decade, prompting wildlife conservation organizations to seek emergency protection for them under the Endangered Species Act.

The Robins In Your Backyard, Nancy's first nonfiction children's picture book, received the Parent Council seal as outstanding from a learning perspective for children ages 4 to 7. It received the Delaware Diamonds Book Award and is an Accelerated Reader Program book.


Raccoon Moon received the International Reading Association's Children's Book Awards Notable Books, the Delaware Diamonds Book Awards list, the BookSense 76 Children's Book List, and is an Accelerated Reader Program book. Raccoon Moon was the featured Read-to-Me book in September 2005 for the National Wildlife Federation's kids nature magazine, Your Big Backyard.


Red Knot: A Shorebird's Incredible Journey has received prepress endorsements from internationally-acclaimed scientists and wildlife conservationists.

Nancy is currently working on artworks for a one-woman exhibit in September, 2006

She recently completed a series of interpretive artworks including native species and habitats for a state park in Delaware.
