"Do the things you think you cannot do".. Eleanor Roosevelt

Background Information

I love to cook and like myself, most women have a thing about cookbooks.  We have tons of them but how many do we actually use?  Hardly any.  Reason being that most of the recipes are either too complex with too expensive ingredients resulting in dishes way to fancy for average families.  Thus began my search for an entertaining easy-to-use book of recipes to feed any family on any budget.. a book that would really be used instead of relegated to the back of the bookshelf.  I quickly discovered that if such a book were to be found, I'd have to write it.  And I did.  Along the way, I sprinkled stories from my childhood and life experience, plus tips and advice that we baby boomers got from our mothers and grandmothers before finding ourselves way too busy to pass onto our own offspring.  I'm willing to bet that you know a daughter, grandchild, "in need" in-law, neighbor or friend who'd enjoy my roundup of recipes, how-tos and hilarity.

Now for a little history about myself.  I was born in Georgia but had a Dad who loved to travel.  He loved it so much that when he was young he joined the Army, served his term, joined the Navy, served is time there and then joined the Merchant Marines.  But he didn't stop there.  He went to work for the railroad and continued his travels.  When the kids started coming along he had to settle down a bit but never lost his love to travel.  My oldest brother is 7 years older than me, he was born in Georgia too but a year or so after his birth the family moved to California where another brother was born.  After a couple of years there they moved back to Georgia.  Seven years later I came along.  When I was about 1 1/2  we moved to Utah where my Mom's family lived.  My 3rd brother was born there.  A couple of years after his birth we moved back to Georgia.  Seven years later my sister was born and guess what we did.  We moved back to Utah where my 2nd sister was born.  Again we stayed a couple of years and back to Georgia.  He settled down then and became a builder.  I think he was a little afraid to do any more traveling considering he now had a house full of kids to take care of.

I think I got my love for travel from him, as well as my love to work with wood, in the garden and just about anything that requires working with your hands.  I've now settled down and stay pretty close to home.  I have 3 grown children and 6 grand children.  My son still lives in Georgia and my daughters live here in North Carolina.

What brought me to North Carolina?  I divorced while still in Georgia, moved to Florida and had a problem finding work that paid enough to support myself and my dog.  There appeared to be 3 professions that paid well.  One was in the medical field, one was bartending and you will have to guess at the 3rd.  I didn't fit either.  So I had a job offer here in NC and moved.  It has turned out to be the best move I've ever made.  I love it here.  I'm close enough to Georgia to take a weekend off to visit my son and his family.  I'm 2 hrs. from the mountains and 4 hrs. from the beach.  Charlotte is a great city to live in.

My book Stir, Laugh, Repeat is made up of both family recipes as well as those I've worked with to make them fit my taste.  I've also loaded it with stories about the recipes.  I hope you will "read" my cookbook and stir up some memories of your own.

Review from Chef Mark Allison, MBA, MC Johnson & Wales University.... "Martha has written a delightful cookery book of inspired family recipes that are easy to recreate in your own home. The stories that accompany each recipe will have you smiling, laughing, and remembering similar circumstances in your own life I'm sure."
