no ordinary woman

To the mothers of the movement, from Harriet Tubman to Merlie Evers to Fannie Lou Hamer to Rosa Parks to the Queen of the Beloved Community. . . Coretta Scott King for whom this poem is focused on the celebration of her transition

Poem Artwork

She kept Martin waiting six months
before saying "I will." And even though she fit his bill of
being brilliant, beautiful, supportive and gracious,
she was still no ordinary woman, she was the embodiment
of a vision from God that neither she nor her husband to be
did not choose.

Her inner fortitude was dress'd in a custom made garment of stainless steel and silk. Her faith was dress'd in robes pass'd down by the architect of The Cross. Her willpower stood strong against violence, ignorance and selfishness of those who did not think we all should be equal.

She kept Martin in her heart; her children, she kept under God's wings. She kept friends close, and enemies between her palms in fervent prayer. And every morning while she went to work, she'd blow a kiss to her gallant knight in shining marble, making a wish that old ways would be made new, and that perhaps this is the day that we finally overcome.

For those of us who witness'd the dreamscape of freedom, we know she was no ordinary woman. For those who follow the ways of peace may we continue in the enduring methods of Ghandi and the eternal wisdom of The Christ-child. For those of us who can only breathe a prayer, jot a thought, extend a hand of unconditional love or say nothing but "I believe" we all have a legacy to carry the vision 'til our own transition has come.

May God bless the family of Coretta Scott King and those who may have had a lesser fanfare, but who share in the background the Greatest Mission. . . .that mission is peace among humanity.

You right! Coretta was no ordinary woman, and she left a legacy that all Black women can follow and take pride in. Great job. The flow is so mellow, just like Mrs. King. Long live her grace in the spirits of women everywhere!

AMEN. Those who read your words cannot help but be touched. Let's pray that those who are moved work diligently toward peace and love in humanity. God Bless their souls...

I especially like this line:
"She kept friends close, and enemies between her palms in fervent prayer."

Thank you for sharing this beautiful tribute, Cynth'ya.

Wish I could engrave your words in gold on a plaque beside the coffin that so many are lining up to see. You did Coretta Scott-King's soul and your own true spiritual justice. Thank you for the blessing of these words.

Love your family picture! Thanks for sharing it. I always considered Coretta King as the model for famous women! She lived quietly in style and grace while at the same time using her great power in ways that never offended but instead advanced her cause and all who believe in it are the better for it. She will be missed! Great work Cynth'ya!
