This poem attempts to subtly show that I have difficulty getting to sleep and once there, that my dreams are plentiful, but varied... They seem to make sense at the time I'm dreaming them, but the more awake I become the more confusing they become and once I awaken, they just flitter away, usually I can't even remember them.

WAKING UP

Letterman, or Leno?
He bounces between the two,
then sometimes Jimmy Fallon,
before his day is through.

The timer turns off the TV
long after he’s asleep.
The chatter of the late, late show
he prefers to counting sheep.

Eight bells tolls the clock,
his mind is but a blur,
it’s that time just before you wake
and his brain has yet to stir.

Scenes flash across a silent screen,
making very little sense.
Snow flakes and a dark cloud,
then an old barbed wire fence.

Bells again in the distance,
trying to jar him awake,
his bladder calls out to him,
there’s a journey he must make.

The smell of coffee brewing,
the timer set for eight.
The sports page demands attention,
the news will have to wait.

Once flowing from his brain,
bits and pieces of his dreams,
now flow away like drift wood
in distant mountain streams.

HE AWAKENS……

The best dreams always seem to play out just before the alarm sounds and just sort of disappear into the morning haze. Bits and pieces remain as I shake my head. Patrick

You remind me again of how powerful is our mind, Richard; and it is a bottomless well of possibility for inspiration. Love and peace to you,

Regis

Barbed wire-Barb wire-Bobbed wire-Bob wire- all these spellings have been used for Barbed wire in our history. But this is about lack of sleep and evasive dreams which a good many people can relate to.

It is amazing how our minds can not only jump from one subject to another but at times be in two or three different places. Well done.
