Our Restless Minds
by John Herlihy
Our restless minds are never completely at rest,
Always on the move, never at home in the nest.
Where is the beloved silence of empty rooms?
Our clutter of thoughts swept away by brooms.
Worry, sorrow, and anxiety all come to the fore,
Uninvited, unannounced, there to fill our store.
As busy bees searching for nectar far from the hive,
Scribbled notes on yellow post-its saying, I'm alive.
A ruined garden now filled with thriving weeds,
Once budding blossoms drawn from tiny seeds.
The mind surges as a river that forever flows,
Reaching stunning highs, falling to desperate lows.
All random thoughts finally flow out into the sky,
Set free by the mind and never questioned on high.
Ah, the silence of a mind eve quiet without cease
With nary a care in the world and feeling at peace.
