This Aging Moon by John Herlihy This aging moon With its old man face So distant - so cold So enigmatic - so bold Its fixed smile Its borrowed light In shadows of darkness This passageway of light The secret of the new moon The revelation of the full moon Intrepid traveler on the near horizon Weary traveler on the distant horizon Always changing - never the same Its waxing and waning made plain There in the night sky to allay our fear There in the heart we hold the moon near - - - - - Copyright © John Herlihy Sunday 8 February 2026

A wonderful acknowledgement of the moon's many moods and images. One is reminded of the question of how it relates to the sun either at moonrise or moonset. The entities seem destined to exchange their steadfast dedication of comfort and protection to our earth. Well done.

The moon wouldn't be there to light the night if it weren't for the sun. Only reflected light, welcome as it is and changing as you have written.

The old moon is new again as of 2024 when a new crater appeared from a meteor strike that hadn't been there before.
