Sandcastles


We built sandcastles, became beach barons
arrogant on the high battlements,
knights in swimming trunks.

The tide came in, it stirred our alarms.
Canute-like, we sat too long,
the waves duly overcame our stern resolve.

We built sandcastles,
but life and the sea made ruin
of our plans.
