Robert Burns


He loved the lassies, Jean Armour

and Highland Mary

He loved freedom and liberty

Robert Burns was Scottish

and he wrote poetry.


He worked on a poor farm

the work did him harm

he went to Edinburgh to work

his poetic charm on the douce ladies

the good wives of Auld Reekie

He became an Exciseman in Dumfries

still writing his songs and verses

still climbin' Parnassus Hill

and playing the old Scots songs

on his fiddle.


We remember his red, red rose

we fondly recall his poor sleekit mouse

and we rightly toast Robert's health

on Burns' Night, we lift our whisky glasses -

ye were some chanter, Rabbie!


you're part of our Scottish landscape;

Scotland in miniature like the isle

of Arran, the Sunday Post and Oor Willie.
