Dance You a Soft Shoe

Poem Artwork

Taste the mist of daybreak,
As you race the rising sun.
Look no further than mid-morning,
And make no plans past noon.

This is no day of reckoning,
And with any luck
It won’t even lead you there;
Just take your lover by the hand,
And find a step that you can share.

Dance you a soft-shoe,
Across the porch this day,
Down the stairs,
With a dancer’s flair,
To the streambed ye will stray.

Drop your clothes,
It’s sweltering,
But you don’t need me to tell ya that,
Just leave em’ stay,
Right where they lay,
But you can keep your hat.

Curtsy low, she does,
As he stands there and drinks her in,
She’s the joyful picture of a former beauty queen,
But he’s just tall and thin.

Promenade if you wish,
Or do-si-do if he'll take the lead.
It won’t be long into the water you’ll fall;
And there fulfill your needs.

Dance you a soft shoe,
Across the porch this day,
Down the stairs ,
With a dancer’s flair,
To the streambed ye will stray.
