Falling Sky

Poem Artwork

I stood and watched
As the sea rose to meet the sky.
I silently considered
How insignificant was I.

The machines and tests
That doctors use to examine me,
Lend veracity to the thought,
Of how very important
 I must surely be,
Even though I know that I am not.

The majesty of the galaxy,
Never mind the universe,
Suggests, you see, to the honest mind,
That perhaps I’m of failing worth.

But then again,
There may be the slightest chance,
That this life I lead
On Planet Earth,
May be more than forgotten dance.

Just maybe the rising sea,
I see,
May not be on the rise at all,
But rather that beautiful sky in sight,
Has itself begun to fall.

It’s the verdict, you know,
The one offered when all is said,
That will ultimately announce our worth,
And too bad that by then we are dead.

As long as we think and breathe and can function, we never know what the next day might bring. From a small acorn a mighty oak might grow and even during our sunset years, the chance to sprout always exists. Why settle for a rocking chair when the world is waiting?
