Poem Artwork

Today is the day
For memories still strong,
As we remember the tragic
Loss of life,
And the fear that soberly
Gripped us all.
If by sudden surprise
All emotion was intensified,
And we knew in our hearts
That our world had changed.

So unforgiving had we become,
As we collectively
Foraged for someone to blame,
Just like a jury so bitterly swayed,
We constructed our gallows
While he knelt and prayed,
And it was easy,
For we all knew him by name.

He’ll leave us soon
Under the pain of scorn,
And I worry
Who will man the helm,
For we are today
A rotten lot,
Quick to bitterly criticize,
And we are soon
To get what we deserve.

Perhaps W. was an easy mark;
It is true that he
Struggled with a phrase,
But he stayed true to that
Which he said he would do,
And served honorably
To the end of presidential days.

I will never forget how relieved
That I was,
So untested was he in his role,
But he rose to the challenge
And he stayed the course,
And he drew his strength
From Heaven above.

History will, I believe,
Be kinder,
Than is the angry mob
That we have become,
And in retrospect
Will be circumspect,
And honor the courage
That he has displayed.

I am in fear for our liberty,
For the matrix is rotting within,
And the principles upon which
This country was built,
Have been largely cast to the wind.
There are, however,
Bastions of nobility,
Which can be found so far and wide:
Soldiers who would willingly
Give their lives,
Brave Americans who serve with pride.

I hope, too, that on days like today,
We could step away from the mob,
And reflect on for a moment
What this man did for us,
So much more than just doing his job.
He did not falter or waver,
Was unrelenting in his pursuit,
And we would do well
If there was another like him,
But I worry about the would-be leaders
On the national stage,
And our prospects,
Which at the moment seem grim.

Frank,
AMEN. This poem is long overdue. I also worry about our future leaders of this country, God help us all.

Many blessings,
~Linda

...and weren't we all relieved when we saw him with that bullhorn that day-- knew we were in capable hands? How quickly we forget what we swore would never-never be forgotten! --Charlie

How well you have voiced so many of my own feelings. I don't think I can ever really despise a man who united this country in prayer...a founding principal in our country, but one which has sadly been lacking. I believe that regardless of all the negative things that can be said about George W., he did stand by what he said he believed and based many of his decisions on prayer. I can only hope that our next president will do the same...but it is such a rare quality in this day and age (at least to openly admit it in the political scene) that I doubt we will ever see it happen again. Sadly...
