I have heard from my old master that

Where there are ingenious contrivances

There are sure to be subtle doings;

And that where there are subtle doings

There is sure to be bred a scheming mind.

But when there is a scheming mind,

The pure simplicity of the heart, alas,

Is impaired. When this pure simplicity

Is impaired, the spirit becomes unsettled

And the unsettled spirit is not the right abode

For the proper character, he used to exhort me.

He reiterated, "If you would only forget

The energy of your spirit and neglect

The care of your body, you might faster

Approximate to the Void, . . but while

You can't regulate yourself, what leisure

Have you to regulate all other men?"

It is not that I am not familiar with gadgets

Or dare not to use any of them -- they are

In so many in our life today, but I should be

So much ashamed to over-use them

For the sake of something imperishable.
