He who is contending in archery
For a few bucks as a prize
Puts forth all his skill.
If the bet be a few quick bills,
He shoots timidly;
If it be for a whole piece of gold,
He shoots as if he were blind at all.
The point is that the skill
Of the archer is the same
In all the three cases,
But in the two latter ones
He is under the influence
Of certain solicitude and
Looks on the external prize
As most important target
Instead of hitting the mark.
All who attach importance
To what is mostly external
Show cracks in their wholeness.
