It's true that fishes live

But men drown in underwater --

They are different

In their constitutions,

And therefore differ

In their habitat and adherence,

In nourishing the body

It's necessary to have all things

Appropriate to its support;

However, there are cases where

There is a superabundance

Of such things and yet

The body is not nourished.

To get a life it is essential that

One's soul do not have left the body;

However, there are some cases

When the body has not been left by soul,

And yet the life has perished.

He who understands

What conditions of life are,

Does not strive after

What is of no use to the life;

And he who understands

What conditions of destiny is,

Does not strive after what it is

Beyond the reach of his goal.

Therefore it is said,

'There is no calamity greater

Than one's ignorance about

When to stop, and no regret greater

Than one's craving for superabundance.'
