Poem Artwork

Those who have got

Their right direction

Are happy when

Reduced to extremity,

And happy when

Having free course.

Their happiness

Is independent

Of both these conditions --

The Course

And its Milestones

Let them hold it for long.

And distress and success

Come to them

As cold and heat,

As wind and rain

In the natural order

Of things.

The truth is,

The right direction

Comes to be first

And more important

Than the Course

Progression itself.

Yes, happiness seems to be a condition that lies within, but there is no doubt that there are things that make us (temporarily) unhappy. The secret is to follow the middle road. That's life. John

Can offer any better comments than Ron and Rich have done. I have taken the wrong direction and still got to where I was going. It just took a lot of asking questions when I thought I was lost.

Yes, in the natural order of things there are ups and downs like the weather. Those of us who are truly happy weather these changes very well and remain happy.

Truth and happiness, in my experiences, seem to go hand in hand. But does being happy prove that we are on the right path? In my experiences the answer is a resounding NO. Perhaps true happiness comes when what we think, what we say, and what we do, are all in harmony together. But who would know that except us. A thousand candles can be lighted from the flame of one candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened or lessened. True happiness can be attained, and spread, without diminishing anything of the self; come what may. Thoughtfully rendered, Alexander. Peace to you... r
