A famously known poet once tried
To blame me, saying, 'Your poor verses, man,
Make no sense; I do not buy them! . .'
I ventured to reply, “When I look back
At the great poets of the past, for most of them,
Poverty and low status were no cause for shame.'
In response he laughed at those my words,
Retorting, 'Your style and discourse --
How diffuse and wide of the mark!'
In a while, he added wistfully, 'I want you
Be up to date: money is the only crucial thing;
Do what they say, that’s it.'
