Until Death Do We Part

On Saturday, August 19, 2017, my wife, Janet, and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. Our two sons and daughter-in-law gave us a surprise party, held in our son, Anthony's, big red barn. Thinking maybe there may be a surprise in store for us, I had written the poem (well it's sort of a poem in a couple of places) below to have on hand to read to Janet. The opportunity did present itself, so I read it to her in the presence of all the guests.

To:  Janet Louise (Holton) Thompson

It's been fifty years today
Since I gave my heart away

To the one whom I adore

Dust to dust—forevermore.

When Lt. Col. Hayes,

With whom I served in Vietnam,
Encouraged me to write you from that far-away land,
It took a long time to muster the courage to do it,
For I was afraid you wouldn't answer.
But thanks be to God, you did.
Had you not responded,
I'm certain we would not be together today.

Thus, on that Saturday evening so long ago,
We stood before God and a throng of people,
In Marshall University's Christian Center,
Declaring that each would take the other
To be our lawfully wedded husband and wife,
To have and to hold,
From that day forward,
For better,
For worse,
For richer,
For poorer,
In sickness and in health,
Until death do we part.

Over the years we—
Have given our lives to Christ together,
Were baptized and have worshipped our Lord and Savior together,
Raised two wonderful sons together,
Have laughed together from the silliest things imaginable,
Cried together during times of happiness and sorrow,
Worried together, sometimes not knowing which way to turn,
Cooked thousands of meals together,
Said good-bye to precious loved ones together,
And have been truly blessed with growing old together.

Today, whether we are in a large or small group of people,
You are still the one I seek to find,
For you are the other half of me,
And I'm more comfortable with you than anyone else.

One day, unless we are called home together,
One of us will pass from this life before the other.
It is my hope that I will be the one,
For I cannot imagine spending one minute here without you.

Now that fifty years has passed,
Looks like our marriage is going to last.

You're still the one whom I adore,

And every day I love you more.

Finally, as Dr. John Phillips may have said so emphatically
—
"Selah!"

Or, "What do you think about that?"

All my love,

David

David,

This is so beautiful, I cried. You are so fortunate to have found one another. May you and your bride have another 50 years!

I'm almost lost for words David...such a beautiful and emotional declaration of your love for the Love of Your Life Janet...
It warms my Heart to read your heartfelt words,
And of all you have enjoyed and endured together....
What a beautiful Bride she was too...
And I remember you also as a handsome young man from
the photo you posted on one of your poems...
You must have made a striking couple...
I wish you both many more truly happy years together...
May God Bless you always...
With love to you both...
Diana....

MY, MY...THE MARVELOUS WONDER OF GOD'S 'PERFECT' LOVE-MATCHES NEVER CEASES TO AMAZE ME. THIS WORK IS SUCH A HUGE BLESSING FOR 'ALL' BECAUSE IT ENCOURAGES THOSE NOT YET MARRIED TO WAIT AND TRUST IN GOD FOR THE ONE HE HAS PICKED OUT FOR THEM. BUT IT ALSO BOLSTERS THE FAITH OF YOUNG COUPLES WHO MAY BE GOING THROUGH PROBLEMS BY LETTING THEM KNOW IF THEY 'HANG IN THERE' GOD WILL KEEP THEIR MARRIAGE AS HE TAKES THEM THROUGH...TOGETHER. AND TO THOSE WHO HAVE STAYED TOGETHER MANY, MANY YEARS THROUGH THICK AND THIN LIKE YOU AND LOUISE... I HAVE TO GIVE A NOTABLE 'SALUTE' FOR HONORING AND CHERISHING THE GOD CREATED INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE SO BEAUTIFULLY! CONGRATULATIONS!!! TO YOU AND LOUISE AND I PRAY THAT YOU MAY BE BLESSED TO SEE AND ENJOY MANY MORE YEARS TOGETHER. THANKS FOR SHARING, DAVID. MUCH LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH TO YOU AND LOUSE...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

So wonderful and heartwarming. I think your wife and those present were overcome with happiness to hear all that you stated in this short poem you had written for the occasion. It made me recall the 50th and 60th anniversary parties that were held for my parents who had 62 years together. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend or I might have written a poem for them.

One thing you didn't include that readers might know, is that you and your wife, after retirement, were able to visit all of the states in the United States. What a wonderful thing to do with your free time along with writing about it.

Oh, David, I am choked up reading this. It is so beautiful, and so is your love. We have seven years on you--and I am shocked to learn that you are married that long. There are so many memories and so many experiences shared by one couple in a 50-year span; they can't be replicated by anyone else but the two of you.
May God continue to bless your years together, as many as still await you. You and Janet are a blessing!

Sincerely,
Connie

Nice. I agree that it looks like your marriage is going to last.
