When I was just a boy, we would go out at dusk to throw rocks into the air and watch bats dive toward them. Now, we are too old and feeble to do such childish things.

                                      It’s Like I Said

Decades ago I could do lots of things—
Pick up wee stones at the edge of dark
Whirl them toward mammals blind as bats
Only to watch them swoop and dive
As if to chase a morsel of food
To haul to their pups back in the cave
Now—decades later—I can barely bend
To pick up stones and fling toward mammals
Blind like bats my eyes too weak to see them
Swoop and dive as if to chase morsels of food
Unable to haul them to their pups in a cave

Reviews of "It’s Like I Said"

It's good to see you posting this little bit of wisdom again. Like I wrote recently in an article, everyone has to give up childish, and even adult, things as we age. Never heard of throwing stones to attract bats. Learn something new all the time. Even from childish pranks.

This morning when I went out to get a little sun. I touched the water in our large pot turned fish pond. Immediately the five little goldfish came up to check my finger and to see if I had dropped any food for their hungry little mouths. I didn't, but they were excited anyway.

Like bats eat mosquitoes, I'm sure they sense and eat every little mosquito larvae they find wiggling on the surface.
