Last week a promising young man was gunned down while he slept in the back seat of a car while on his way to his bachelor party. Possible motive - wearing the wrong colors. Innocent children have been gunned down as they play in their front yards or homes. Possible motive - gang drive-bys. Schools have banned students from wearing red or blue in any form. Reason - these are identified as gang colors. Terrorism? Control? You decide! I wrote this as a call to action against the increasing violence from gang activity. I encourage people to contact their lawmakers to enact legislation to make all gang activity subject to asset forfeiture and seizure laws regardless of whether narcotics are involved or not. The State Attorney General's office is a place to contact to ask or suggest that a national sweep or crackdown on gangs be instituted immediately. We have enough to deal with in this country without living in fear and terror associated with gang activity and actions.

Poem Artwork

See the swing it sways alone

waiting for a child to come.

Concrete jungle harsh and cold

love is sprinkled to and fro.

Eyes of stone guarding domains

children trapped, they cannot play.

Red and blue are not allowed

basic colors of the killing ground.

Our blood is blue inside our hearts,

turning bright red when it departs.

Concrete grey turns bloody when

you break the rules, wearing blue or red.

Terrorism takes on many forms

not only in a desert storm.

Control and fear spews acidic angst

locking doors are commonplace.

Where is the innocence in children's eyes?

Why are families scared and tired?

Red, White and Blue are the colors of our flag...

Wear red or blue...your life may end!

Having lost a son tragically to gun violence, this spoke directly to my heart. Thanks.

P o w e r f u l. Generally not a big fan of rhyme {perhaps because I occasionally commit it, & am not, er, the best}, but you put it to work in such a way that it increases the altready-considerable impact. Horrible situation. Horrible. Let's hope that by lending your voice, you are bringing hope and determination to turn things
around. That there will come a day when gang warfare and access
to automatic weapons stop maiming and killing innocent people.
A n y o n e. Here's to a better world. Peace, Phyllis <3

I am so angry that small children live in fear of rampant violence from "sigh" other only slightly larger children! What a sad commentary on todays world! Great words and I am glad to see someone else who says 'enough is enough' Sandi

A truly shattering write of what today's world is like. Gone are the days when children were innocent, they could still trust neighbors and adults, and could just be kids. Truly, a powerful clarion call for change and parental responsibility to teach their children well. Thank you, Poet--you may have saved a life today in your words.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla. :(

So sad when a life is lost because of a color.
A sadly touching write.

From the clinic of social medicine a picture is shown...
Emotions are processed in the heart of the Poet, and
"Colors of Death" is defined with words from the lexicon
of a wise heart that pumps wisdom and harmony.

This poem is like the lamp of the LIGHTHOUSE... "Colors of Death"
I read; learned from, and am impressed with its contents and alert
messages blinking their lights through the lines of this social poetic masterpiece. "Colors of Death" is a golden page for the treasure of Poetry.

I salute You, Sublime Poet!

COLORS OF DEATH is an extremely powerful write for many reasons Mizzlady Poetress. Among the most significant, I believe, is its acknowledgement of the fact that a kind of civil war got started on the streets of this country a long time ago and still rages unchecked. If we all, terrorists included, ever learn to police our own individual actions we won't need to worry about policing anyone else's. Enjoyed the read.

Gang warfare has been around in parts of our country since I can remember. Hatred in any form has to be rooted out and not allowed to grow. It truly is a form of terrorism.
