This poem by Dr Audrey Coatesworth, written after her 'Choice for Teenagers' poetry book was published, and, using metaphor, has the hidden warning to teenagers that if the brain is damaged by either drugs or alcohol, then the beauty of life will be gone forever.

Poem Artwork

In this poem, using metaphorical verse, I continue my work in this different medium of the written word, and aim to give a cautionary message to teenagers about the dangers of excessive alcohol and taking drugs.                                Dr A Coatesworth

Flowers In The Rain

A grey sky, stormy clouds

Rain batters fragile flowers

After months of slow perfecting

They are weak against its powers

Petals fall as live confetti

To the path, their beauty gone

All that effort washed away

A heavy shower, it wasn't long

Yet they cannot now return

Their time is lost forever

Another season, another crop

Old stems someone will sever

The plant will not feel sadness

Fortune relieves it of regrets

Because is has no memory

It neither remembers, nor forgets

But we are different, we have both

If we keep a healthy brain

We can tend the fallen plant

And help new growth to gain

But should we cause damage

Or destroy our delicate brain

Our time of beauty will be gone

Like the flowers in the rain

Audrey,

A very educational piece about the use of drugs.
