Facing the future

( from 'Twilight Years' by Audrey Coatesworth)

I talked to Patience

In my head, of course

She was unusually abrupt

'I'm neither donkey nor a horse

I have always tried my best

But, it never is enough

I can help no more

I'm really not so tough'

So, I looked for Courage

I decided to have a word

'I have been stretched to my limit

To try more would be absurd

Something must be wrong

I really do declare

As I feel quite defeated

And, what's more, I do not care'

Humour, my dear friend

What help can you now give

I have suffered far too much

But still I want to live

'Fear not, there is still a lot

That makes me want to smile

Hold my hand, and together

Let's go the final mile'

Patience go to your bed

Until you find more strength

'I'll recover', said Courage

'My string has still some length'

Then, I was given a message

Though not on my mobile phone

Just a different kind of thought

'Fear not, you will not walk alone'

As a psych nurse I find those without hope are those I worry the most about, it is hope that allows us to carry on, hope and the three human traits of courage, patience, humor help us survive when all else fails us. Lovely words laced with considerable wisdom!

Love it! Getting older, we do get wiser and also tired of the daily challenges. Love your last line, because as long as you are writing and posting, it's true. "you will not walk alone." Eileen

Beautifully conceived, brilliantly stated. It flows with grace and
is wrapped in wisdom.

You are certainly not alone. You go softly with your thoughts as companions.

Interesting play on words here, Aubrey. I liked the defeatism of Patience and Courage. Leave it to humour to set the record straight, and in so doing Patience and Courage took a deep breath and began to strengthen. But what really made the poem special was the last line. You backed up and did not scream your faith, you allowed it to gently remind you lest you had forgotten. Very effective.
