sitting here staring at the monitor
want to do something but
have no idea what it is I want to do
so I write this poem belaying that fact
. . . let’s see . . .
I have unwritten poems to write
not to mention
but I’ll mention it anyway
never mind the poems
in the junk pile of things started
and stopped
are the novels I gave up on
some I have half finished
isn’t that something
that I could write and almost finish
a novel, but give up on it
what the heck
I have written and published
quite a few novels
ahhh . . . but when I try another one
I get the feeling I have run out of words
not kidding here
can a person actually run out of words
I believe I have No! No! You say with conviction you still write poetry
yes, that’s a truism
but believe me when I say
poetry writing and novel writing
are two different things
completely
I’ll not dwell on that subject
take my word for it
with that I will leave you
to go somewhere and twiddle my thumbs ya’ll

I hope you won't twiddle very long. I wouldn't say that you have run out of words. I think you may have run out of "novel" ideas. It is hard to come up with a good idea that hasn't been written before by someone else better.
As you can see by my comments, I'm never at a loss for words. I'm doing something now that I never did before when I would write a chapter in a novel and then never change another word. Lately, every time I look at a chapter I began adding more words, not to make it longer but to make it more realistic and clear to the reader. That's where my words come from. Trying to get it right.
Great thoughts Jerry! Yes, your human just like the rest of us. We all need "time-out" and "vacations" from everything. This includes writing. I consider myself a mediocre writer who occasionally becomes inspired by another writer and a small light bulb of inspiration helps me write something pretty decent. My wife will ask me, "This is really good. Did YOU write this?" My answer is of course, "Yes, but I was inspired to do so by many other great writers!" You are one of them. Live with it! JMD
For someone who has run out of words, you certainly took a few words to say it. In fact, I don't believe it. Tomorrow is another day and as the new dawn comes, so will your unique words.
What a title! I've yet to run out of words, but inspiration eludes me quite often, so those words just ramble around with no clear direction or objective. My wife, on the other hand, never runs out of words. Nobody can make a short story long like her. It's her specialty. From one thumb twiddler to another, I enjoy this amusing write.
Let the word-stew simmer a while longer. It will come to where it will be worth your tasting. Perhaps we don't run out of words, but find some difficulty applying words to new ideas. I know I have that difficulty often. Stay with it, Jerry. The simmer is magic.
