gettin’ old
I have finally made it to
the getting old time
in my life
n’er thought I would make it
this far
but I am here now
I don’t particularly like it
but what to do
but go with the flow
actually I’m very fortunate
my real parents
infused some damn good
genes and other things to me
I’ve n’er spent more than a few hours
in the hospital
I’ll be eighty my next birthday
except for getting my tonsils
and appendix removed
when I was a kid
I loved getting my tonsils out
they promised
me all the ice cream I could eat
wasn’t the first lie I was told
all I am saying here
is that I have been very
very fortunate
eh . . . I turn eighty next year
go see the doctor
more than I used to
I have oxygen things all over the place
other aches and pain
still I feel privileged that I
maintain good health
even with all the bad things that dwell
within my body
I greet each day
with a positive outlook
you bet I do

You are truly blessed, My Friend. I don't much like getting old either but it's better than the alterative. Enjoyed your insightful pen.

Now that's a good attitude! At nine, my brother and I got that ice cream and oatmeal until our throats were able to take the roughness of other food. Sorry you missed out on that ice cream it was very good.

And it's good that you have all of your parts and parcel still intact and not surgically removed. Can't get them back once they're taken out.

You know Jerry, if you didn't know how old you are, how old would you be?
Your humor and writing makes me feel apprciative of health, good parents, and blessed to live one more day!

When I wake up and my granddaughter is staying the night, I tell her we have to go wake the house up it has overslept. Ha ha she just giggles and thinks I am the funniest grandma ever...
Thats how you make me feel, happy, and glad to live one more day!

Bless you my friend! Truly glad your license says 18 because that's how I see you!

Hugs,
Teresa

An interesting glimpse into the man who writes the words. 80 is quite an accomplishment, Jerry. My Father is 94. Enjoyed this. Peace... r

As we grow older we begin to realize that every day should matter to us. No matter what the outcome at the end of the day we give thanks for making it through another day. I have enjoyed your sensitive poem today , Hugs

You could have told me a lie and I would believe; but having read through all your work these past few years, I know that you always speak the truth, one of the hallmarks of your poetry, even if it is a harsh truth. This poem is mellow and full of insight. Quiet acceptance is definitely the way to go along with the positive outlook you mention at the end. Enjoy life while you have it. When it's gone, you'll never now what happened. Just keep writing, my friend.

PS: You stole the picture I was going to use in an upcoming poem on "age".

As my dad used to say, I'm still on the right side of the sod. Just keep that positive outlook, and keep writing. A toast to you.

How time flies, Jerry! I'm so happy that you are in good health after all that you had gone through in life. Continue on writing your expressive poetry. Through it, you'll heal your emotions. Keep a healthy diet and you'll live up to a 100!

Gettin' old, who isn't, wish I was in better shape myself, but we all grow old in our own ways. Some like you, doing pretty good and some like me, not so good. But still I am alive & I have heard that that is better than the alternative, though death is just the next step in human evolution and would welcome it with open arms...-e-

Good to hear, for without finding the good in every bad or negative experience, well... you eat yourself to death, and I'm not talking about food. Those negative emotions are killers. To applaud every experience with a resounding clap of the hands is to never let that bad stuff take over. I'm constantly asking my inner self: "Okay. What's the lesson, friend?" And, believe it or not, I've come to accept that we keep creating the same lesson until we learn it. Sounds like you're doing fine. That positive attitude, along with your health, is the most of what you count on at our age. Of course I'm extremely fortunate to still have my companion of the past 14 years now wife of 2 months, so my hitting 82 next Tuesday is a particularly high point. Gonna close the phones, the email and all other means of people reminding me, "Hey, bro. It's your birthday!" Yeah... we'll just call it another day, okay? Don't need reminding. Hang in there, Jerry. You've got the best years comin'. Experience, learning, wisdom, and the all important use of your time... reflection.
