Glittering Prizes
There, in the darkness of the deep,
Where cold crustaceans crawl and creep,
A fishy angler with lighted lure
Swims slowly out from gloom obscure.
Delicate death in the watery night,
Awesome jaws 'neath a fatal light.
Lugubrious luminescence;
Flashing, shining omniprescence.
'While darting dots cut through the air,
Attracting mates to come and pair.
Brilliant flies of glowing fire,
Airborne genes of a sparkling pyre.
Beautiful magic of the gods?
Results of scientific odds?
Eons of such coruscation
Preceeded Man's investigation.
Did Lucifer with laser light
But oxidise the ether bright?
Neons of such fascination
Exceeded all imagination.
When there's darkness in your brain,
And cold unknowns to cause you pain,
A glimmering catch may yet surprise,
Swim out slowly to feast your eyes.
For this natural 'lumination
Is a cause for celebration.
When cast to Earth through mortal lies,
Behold! Nature! A glitt'ring prize!
A wonderful description of the power of life to learn how to survive in very alien environments. Gives rise to the thought that life can survive and even thrive on alien planets unlike the earth but containing the ingredients necessary for life to grow and evolve into creatures like those found in the dark deeps of the oceans.
A piece composed cleverly. Flows nicely. Requires some meditation. The spiritual subtext is predominate (to me) even though several intellectual meanings can be extrapolated. The three questions (the writer poses) are key to me, and act as a swordsman defending against what some claim Lucifer is responsible for, while using what the Most High God created, ("and God said, let there be light, and there was light") as the substantive argument for the seeming thankfulness he feels.
