Beast Within

I love my cat with all my heart

But the beast within her occupies a part

For Mother Nature got there first

And gave her an instinct to kill; a thirst

At five in the morning I woke with a jolt

And ran downstairs like a thunderbolt

My eyes befell a wretched, sad sight

A quivering fledgling full of fright

A present from Cocoa, my cat, to me

I wanted to cry, set that poor bird free

What fate awaits that poor little might?

My thoughts; I wished it died peacefully in the night

For how can I play mother hen?

And what to feed, how and when?

Now it’s just a waiting game

That poor bird will never tame

Death, I know, will knock on my door

And claim that chick from my floor

I love my cat with all my heart

But the beast within her is a frightening part

p.s.  I’m sure I heard my cat singing:

“One, two, three, four, five

Once I caught a bird alive

Six, seven, eight, nine, ten

Then I let it go again….!!!”

I agree with Ron's statement: "A cat is just being a cat", and that's just what cat do.

She was just trying show off or play with the bird, but unfortunately had kill it by accident.

So sorry for your loss.

Andrea, it is a dilemma! Very well written!
If you think of the birds we eat
(chicken,etc;-)you might feel better towards your
cat who is only doing what comes naturally...

LOL.....had to laugh at the P.S.....I bet she was singing too! but seriously I always find it hard to come to terms with the beast in all species....life must eat life just to live.
Nice write Andrea :-)

Andrea I am having an awful problem with this..
we adore birds and have six feeders and four
birdbaths....and our neighbors cat...which is truly
lovely...creeps into our backyard area and
kills the birds....we do not want to harm the cat..
but I am looking for ways to keep it out of our
garden and away from my birds...I found a gorgeous
gold finch dead this morning....so as you can see...
I really relate to this...I guess it is their instinct..
and they dont mean to kill but to play..but in the meantime
manytimes the bird dies....floria

I love cats and birds both, Andrea, as you do...and I have had
to come to the realization that the cat is no more guilty of a
bad act catching and eating a bird, than we are of killing and
eating a mammal.
It's the system, hon.

I enjoyed your poem, and shared the angst.

Good poem, Andrea. It is unsettling, I know, but an animal's natural instinct. They kill for food, mostly, and rarely, if ever, each other. Humans do, however. And sometimes just out of sheer malice!

That picture of your cat is adorable, Andrea. And they do have an instinct to hunt, as, unfortunately, many humans do - part of the beast in us, too.

I've quit letting my felines outside since I love birds as well as cats, and I can't stand to see the little birdies suffer.

Several years ago, a huge feral cat used to deliver squirrels to my back door. I guess he thought I was too dumb to find my own food.

It's instinct you know? Nature has made cats of all sizes predators. Just be glad she's a house cat and not a ferrel cat.
I hope the chick pulls through, and the beast within is tamed.
Good write Andrea. Lisa

Andrea, a wonderful piece. Cats are some of the strangest of creatures around. They are at times a joy to watch, and then there those presents which can come to your step in all forms of things that wiggle, crawl or fly. An enjoyable read.

Oh to be cat where that dark side can be accepted and for which I do not have be accountable! Yes, dear Darwin - the survival of the species - or is it the survival of the fastest?!
Self awareness identifies the Jungian-named SHADOW within each of us. To know is to open understanding - this, in turn brings balance.

Thank you, ANDREA, for yet another maspterpiece of creative and insightful writing!

Now I know why I prefer dogs!!!

The cat instinct is what makes them unique in the domestic animal kingdom. I enjoyed this piece. Nicely done.
