Café at Night

His canvas was a complete blank

Paints, colours were his words

Immersed in thoughts he sank

Burning desires inside him stirred

He sent postcards, all different

Each one a separate clue

All were sent in succession

All were sent to you

The first an empty cup

The first of a few

It read; “I need to sup

I’m thirsty for you”

Second - an image of bread

And a sentence too

It plain and simply said

“I’m hungry for you”

Third - were two chairs

A table with cloth too

“I’ve saved these for us

To sit, just me and you”

Fourth - a map of France

A circle to mark a town

Arles was highlighted

“No need for formal gown”

Fifth - a clear night sky

Full of twinkling stars

“Please follow me here

From wherever you are”

Sixth - a calendar

A day, a month, a year

“Keep this day free

Just one day need be clear”

Seventh - a clock

The time - 11 pm

"Je suis le nuit

Tu est ma femme"*
 

His painting complete

Carefully constructed, tenderly construe d

Like Van Gogh’s, “Café at Night.”

Finally he simply wrote “I love you”
