Mr Peraza Pauses

Of all the images from last Sunday's Memorial in New York, this one stopped me in my tracks and brought spontaneous tears, not least because of the understated words of its caption: "Mr Peraza pauses..." My observed details are fiction. xx

Poem Artwork

MR PERAZA PAUSES

Felled to one knee, long arm outstretched

like some warm-blooded spectre’s,

he places a soft, electric palm over

sacred, deep-etched letters – an echo

of his own, as yet, time-distant memorial:

Robert David Peraza

Here, at this weeping wall,

this place of no recovered body,

there’s added: Jnr

A spire of golden sunlight prostrates

across such heavy toll of names,

strokes Peraza’s burdened salute,

his bowed head silvered with the

bromide of grief, lips pressed against

cold bronze in homage and despair.

Square falls of mighty waters

drown out the city’s din,

anaesthetise pain’s roar,

transfigure dust and devastation

down, down and away.

What is flesh but deluge and vapour;

spirit, if not power and cleansing?

Immaculate in Armani from

snug fit of his pearl-white collar

and cut of his silk-lined suit

to the buff of his well-heeled brogues,

just one dangling shoe-lace

betrays a decade’s locust years,

earths him to this holy ground

which he can never leave.

Grief touches everyone. Love the part about the weeping wall. That image alone is perfectly heartbreaking. Fantastic writing, Kate.

Kate, your poem may not immortalize Mr. Peraza -- nor was it your intent to accomplish that goal -- you have however penned a memorial to serve as a measure of the mettle of peace and freedom loving peoples the world over -- you have created a poetic photo of grief that could no longer be held in abeyance -- your "Mr. Peraza" symbolizes that premise for you, and for us -- I bid you love and peace my dear friend -- Jon Michael

Almost nowhere except in firestorms and bombed buildings in war do you find so many people lost–pulverized–and mixed with the paper and dust of an office building to the unrecognizable truth of horror.

Your written images are etched in my mind.

Amazing what one image can conjure up in the mind and heart. This is a very well written poem, Miss Kate. You certainly have struck a chord within me.

Miss you much!

Peace, love and light,

Beautiful homage to loss and pain. It seems to me like the terrorists achieved their goal. The free world has not been the same since. With all the talk of strength and resilience, if you ask any business owner, things were changed forever that day.

I'm just so so inspired by this beautifully crafted story of excellence, that for all practical purposes, is not far from the truth of his life. I just love the way you have captured this moment, from the grass roots up. A keeper!
