Sara Webb Quest's need to confront the meaning of true success resulted in a potent poem.
SUCCESS
Success comes from poverty of the heart.
The heart that knows what it is to be lost
Reaches out in its desperation for a permanent solution
And will do so until it finds it.
It may find one lasting answer
Or it may find many.
In either case, the poor heart will be richer in content,
And the more wise,
More wise than the heart
That rises quickly in other people's eyes
Through surface charm
To the tilting tower of material success.
This glass heart will often teeter at the top,
Then plunge into mirky depths,
Where, broken, it will join all others.
There, it will learn of true success,
The kind that comes when we put together
The pieces from a disaster.
And this time, when the heart rises, it will know
If it falls from its true elevation,
It will be poorer than before,
But richer in spirit.
Joseph Addison once said, "'Tis not in mortals
To command success, but we'll do more...
We'll deserve it." And so, Do not question
Where success lies, but ask what it is for.
